Ophthalmic Equipment Dust Covers: A Practical Way to Protect Your Devices and Promote Your Practice

August 26, 2026 | 5 min read | By Custom Machine Cover

An ophthalmic instrument is a precision optical device, and an exam room is not a clean room. Lint, fine paper dust and whatever the air handling circulates settle on a slit lamp between patients. The first sign is not dust on the housing. It is a faint haze in the image, and a surface that wants wiping again by mid-morning.

Why Do Ophthalmic Instruments Need Dust Covers?

Because optics collect particulate, and wiping them is work. A cover does the job passively in between, and it never touches the lens coating.

The conventional answer is to wipe the optics down more often. That costs staff time, and repeated wiping on a coated surface carries its own risk. The wrong cloth, or a cloth used once too often, leaves fine scratches that no amount of cleaning takes out.

There is a compliance angle as well. Ophthalmic equipment is a medical device, and keeping it dust-free and undamaged between appointments is part of keeping its performance consistent. A cover also absorbs the everyday knocks of a busy practice, where a bumped instrument means an expensive repair rather than a cleaning job. The same passive-protection logic applies elsewhere in a clinic — see our medical equipment covers.

Why Put Your Practice Logo on Ophthalmic Equipment Covers?

A printed cover is the one item in the room that every patient and every visiting specialist sees, and it is otherwise blank. Put your logo on it and it reads as attention to detail.

For a dealer or a distributor the calculation runs longer. You supply the unit once; the cover stays on it for years, so your name sits in front of the end user long after the invoice has been filed.

The print is a one-time setup. Once the screen or transfer plate exists, every cover that follows carries the logo, and there is no per-unit marketing cost to add to the quote.

Which Cover Size Fits Your Ophthalmic Instruments?

Four sizes cover the instruments we see most often, whether they sit on an ophthalmic unit or share a two-instrument table.

Cover Size (W × H × D) Fits
75 × 55 × 45 cm Two ophthalmic instruments
40 × 70 × 30 cm Slit lamp
45 × 45 × 27 cm Single instrument
27 × 20 × 40 cm Chart projector

Two of the four usually settle a single-instrument room: the slit lamp cover, plus one of the smaller sizes for a chart projector or a second unit. The largest is for setups that hold two instruments at once. Because these are universal rather than cut to one brand, one cover style can serve a whole equipment line. We apply the same universal-fit approach to machine covers and CNC machine covers for industrial equipment. For the clinical side, the same procurement logic is set out in our medical equipment cover OEM guide.

What Material Should You Specify for an Ophthalmic Equipment Cover?

For optical equipment the material matters as much as the size. The cover has to protect the instrument without shedding a single fibre onto a lens.

A thick and strong non-woven fabric in white is the practical choice. It is lint-free, so it does not shed onto the optics. It drapes without stressing the instrument, it breathes rather than trapping moisture against the housing, and a damp cloth is enough to keep the cover itself tidy.

Fit matters as much as fabric. A cover that is too tight pulls on delicate components; one that is too loose slips off or bunches. Our universal sizes run slightly generous so the drape is neat and stays put. If your instrument falls outside the four, custom dimensions are available on request, as with our equipment covers for other industries.

On a printed order, placement is the detail worth confirming. We set the logo on the front panel so it is visible with the cover on the instrument, with a small design or tagline below it if you want one. Screen printing and heat transfer suit different colour counts and order volumes, and we confirm the layout on a pre-production sample before the run.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom ophthalmic covers?

Our standard MOQ for custom-logo covers is 50 units per design. For a first-time order with a custom-printed logo, we typically recommend 100 units minimum to amortise the screen or pattern setup cost across a reasonable volume. We can discuss lower MOQs for trial orders; contact us with your target volume.

How long does a custom-logo cover order take?

A first-time order typically runs 4–6 weeks from approved artwork to ready to ship. This includes the pre-production sample to confirm fit and print placement (1 week), material procurement (1–2 weeks), and production with QC (2–3 weeks). Repeat orders are faster, typically 3–4 weeks, because the pattern and print spec are already on file.

Can the covers be supplied as a mix of sizes in one order?

Yes. A single order can mix all four sizes. For example, 20 units of the 40 × 70 × 30 cm slit lamp cover and 30 units of the 45 × 45 × 27 cm single-instrument cover. This lets you outfit a full range of equipment with one print design and one shipment.
